2014 Fire

There was a fire at First Lutheran on Thursday, August 28, 2014, which was set intentionally. The sanctuary was burned extensively. The organ was destroyed, as were many of the stained glass windows. Informed by expert opinion, the congregation voted on January 19, 2015, to demolish all buildings at 6th and Washington, which was accomplished in February and March. In January 2016 the congregation purchased land across the corner from the previous site, on which to rebuild. The rebuilding has begun, and you can read all about it and see photos on our new building page.

You can listen to Fire Song, written by Brian Wentzel the day after the fire.

The worship service that took place a few days after the fire was emotional for many. You can view the beginning of that service, and the bulletin is also available.

Some pictures from the fire and its aftermath follow.

Hope the Bear

A stuffed bear was sent to the congregation. "Hope" has traveled to a number of Lutheran churches that have been hit by tragedy. You can read her story here.
